I’m participating in #5DaysofFail, the brainchild of the one and only Jenny Yang. A group of us have committed to allowing ourselves to fearlessly put ourselves out there and create a small piece of artwork a day for 5 days. Each piece is based on an inspirational word given to us at midnight the night before. Yesterday’s word was “Grief”. Everyday, we’re also asked to record how it went, here’s what I sent over for this song:

How was it?
The word grief seems so straight forward at times. Immediately images of cemeteries and caskets swirl around in my mind’s eye. A few years ago, days after my grandmother’s death, I immediately wrote a song about her, steeped in grief. Not a song written about grief, rather a song written locked in a state of grief. I cherish that moment and that song, however where I am today, I wouldn’t be able to write from within grief. Not authentically.

This tripped me up a bit as I started today’s song. But if I dig just a little bit deeper, I find grief permeates my life in more subtle ways as well. It colors life in quiet, private ways that aid in adding dimension. When a friend moves to a new city, I grieve. When the leaves change color and fall, I grieve. When the sun sets on a particularly beautiful day, I grieve. I am a creature built to hope only to grieve in the passing/fleeting nature of life. That’s what this song is about. Smaller moments of grief that prick when something as pure as love isn’t quite enough anymore. When doors are shut that should be opened. Definitely not perfect in the least bit… but that’s the beauty of it all, right?

Neil Gaiman doles out some incredible advice on life and how to pursue a career in the arts. A beautiful and helpful perspective that encourages one to have the right mind set.

"I learned to write by writing. I tended to do anything as long as it felt like an adventure and to stop when it felt like work. Which meant that life did not feel like work." - Neil Gaiman

"Make good art. Make it on the good days. Make it on the bad days."

"Write and draw and play just as you can."

Check out this short clip of “Rescue Me” from last night’s Tuesday Night Project!

What I’ve Been Learning.

All I can say is it’s been an intense 8 months.

8 months ago, I decided to get off my lazy bum and take control of my life. Since I wrote down a measly list of goals on a crinkled old envelope I found in my purse, it’s been go time. For the first time in years, sleeping and lounging wasn’t at the top of my priority list. I’ve seen a fire within myself that I thought had long ago been extinguished. I’ve been working hard to stay honest, remain true to myself and to not let the little things get me down. It’s been tough but along the way, I’ve been met with such support and love. It’s been entirely humbling. I often find myself in tears when I think back to all the people that have taken a chance on me even when I don’t deserve it. I feel fortunate… and there’s a rumbling inside of me that reminds me the work has just begun. This is both invigorating and terrifying.. in the best way possible. For today, I did want to jot down a few of the things I’ve been learning through the immense support of my community.

- People respond to positivity.

- Walk into every room with the goal to simply be completely you

- Vulnerability breeds communication and requires courage

- Talk the talk AND walk the walk. People will notice.

- Love grows exponentially as you give it. The more love you give, the freer you become.

- Give trust to gain trust.

- Never forget who you were in the context of who you’ve become.

- We’re only human.

- I am the absolute best at being me, no one can do it like I can.

- Bravery doesn’t always appear brave in fact, most times it’s invisible.

- Fear is not the enemy. Being fearful can be.

- You can breathe through a lot of pain in the hours before dawn. The sun will always rise.

- Friends will surprise you at every turn. Be open with them and if they honor you with the same, you will see beauty beyond your wildest dreams.

- Don’t fear pain. It happens.

- Do it. Even if you’re scared. In fact, do it because it scares you.

- Say yes! Even if you’re surrounded by negative people (which you should try to avoid), never be afraid to stay positive!

- Music communicates. As fun as it can be to criticize people’s work, it’s never productive. At it’s core, even simple/silly/brash sounding songs are communicating facets of the human.

- Being inclusive is more interesting than being exclusive.

- Always tell people how much they mean to you. No one hears it enough.

- You deserve to be treated with respect and to be surrounded by people that not only support your dreams but allow you to expound upon them and bring them to fruition.

So much more to learn! I promise I’m going to actually start updating this blog more often. I want the journey to be shared… even if I have no clue where I’m going just yet. Thanks for reading <3

Heart-Shaped

"I’ve got some heart-shaped earrings

I keep ‘em in my wallet

Beside my cash, my pictures and my cards.

I’d rather keep ‘em hidden

Than stumbling in the wind

I’d rather keep my hearts left in the dark

Because if you know not light

The darkness doesn’t feel as deep

And if you know not love,

The hate can’t grip you with it’s teeth.

And if you’ve timed it right

You’ll erase me from your memory

And all will be forgotten in the end.

These little heart-shaped earrings

I’ve worn them in the past

Beside you in the meadow, in the grass

You clasped them to my ears

And said ‘Dear you look so pretty’

And in that moment I wish we could last.

But if you know not light

The darkness doesn’t feel as deep

And if you know not love,

The hate can’t grip you with it’s teeth.

And if you’ve timed it right

You’ll erase me from your memory

And all will be forgotten in the end. ”

Why are there so many different types of loss?
